SEER is defined as Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is the ratio that compares the cooling output of your AC system during a typical cooling season (using the indoor temperature and an average of outdoor temperatures ranging from 60 to 100 degrees), and then divide by the energy it uses measured in Watt-Hours. Like the miles per gallon ratio for your car, the higher the SEER system rating- the higher the efficiency of your system. Also like your car mileage, the SEER rating variable changes depending on how hard the system is working for your home. The amount labeled for your air conditioner will always be the maximum level of efficiency your system reached at any given time.

Your SEER rating may also indicate how many components the system contains to output cool air. Air Conditioners with a lower SEER rating, 13-16 SEER, may only contain a single-stage compressor and run only at a single speed- meaning you may experience a less even house temperature as the system slowly adjusts to the climate. You may also feel more humidity in your home as humidity increases the longer the system is off.

Now that we’ve defined the SEER rating, let’s talk about purchasing a new system. There’s no magic number when buying a new HVAC system. It really depends on the size and needs of your unique home. Consulting an expert is the best way to know which system is right for you. Most experts will tell you that any system with a SEER rating above 13 is putting you in the right ballpark. If you are looking to save money on your energy bill, and possibly receive tax credits for energy savings, a higher SEER system is where you want to look.
